TransCanada Trail (17.2 km)

This 8-kilometer section of the TransCanada Trail, managed by the non-profit TransCanada Trail organization, runs between Blackfalds and Lacombe in central Alberta. The paved route passes Lacombe Lake, which is home to a variety of waterfowl, including the canada goose, blue-winged teal, bufflehead, red-necked grebe, and common loon. Along the trail, visitors may spot wildlife such as mule deer, red fox, beaver, and muskrat, as well as a range of bird species like the downy woodpecker, least flycatcher, eastern phoebe, red-breasted nuthatch, and red-winged blackbird. The surrounding flora includes trembling aspen, balsam poplar, white spruce, and willows, as well as plants like wild red raspberry, saskatoon, chokecherry, wild sarsaparilla, goldenrod, and meadow anemone. The trail also passes Kuhnen Park, a public recreation area, providing an accessible way to explore the local area and wildlife.

Access: from Red Deer, set your course northward on Highway 2A. Veer westward onto Township Road 400, also known as Lakeside/Sargent Road. Along this scenic route, there are areas for parking.
