Sylvan Lake Natural Area (44.7 km)

Located 10 km northeast of Eckville on the northwest shore of Sylvan Lake, this 33-acre natural area features dry mixedwood forest, willow shrubbery, reed beds, and a levee that forms a lagoon-like habitat. The site is known for birdwatching, with species like downy and pileated woodpeckers, least flycatchers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, bald eagles, red-eyed vireos, northern flickers, and a variety of waterfowl. Hiking is difficult due to flooding from beaver activity, with limited access to the north and the original entrance now underwater. A few trails lead to the water’s edge, though access is challenging. The area is at risk from increasing development in the Sylvan Lake region, including nearby RV campsite construction. Despite these challenges, the area remains rich in biodiversity and offers a peaceful, low-use environment. For more information, call 403-748-3939.

Access: Head north on Highway 20 from Sylvan, turn left onto Rainy Creek Road, then left onto Range Road 24. The site is at the end of the road on the left.
