Hummer (42.5 km)
Hummer is a 160-acre protected area located 9 km northwest of Elnora, Alberta, featuring wetland, grassland, upland shrub, and aspen forest habitats. The wetland, with its standing water, is an important stop for waterfowl and shorebirds, including the Blue-winged Teal, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Red-necked Grebe, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Black Tern. A large flowing spring in the southeast corner provides year-round open water for minnows, thus providing food for a variety of wildlife. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, including moose, white-tailed and mule deer, coyotes, red foxes, and Plains Garter Snakes, which may suggest the presence of a nearby hibernaculum. Additional species include muskrat, beaver, and Northern Pocket Gopher. While there are no designated trails, the area is easy to walk through, and visitors can find a memorial rock and possible remnants of an old homestead. Plant life includes willows, wild rose, prairie rose, and purple milk vetch. Hummer offers birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities and is especially accessible in winter if road conditions allow.
Access: From Delburne, travel south on Highway 21 for 12 km. Turn west onto Township Road 362 and continue 3.3 km. Then, head south on Range Road 240 for 4.1 km, and the destination will be on your right.
