Fleming Slough (18 km)
The area features large, shallow wetlands surrounded by cultivated fields, providing habitat for a variety of bird species such as tree swallows, mallard ducks, canvasbacks, buffleheads, gadwalls, scaup, red-winged blackbirds, and clay-colored sparrows. During migration, visitors may also spot tundra and trumpeter swans, snow geese, northern harriers, sora, black-necked stilts, northern pintails, stilt sandpipers, Baird's sandpipers, semipalmated sandpipers, and green-winged teal. The wetlands support plants like willows, cattails, trembling aspen, and balsam poplar. Mammals such as mule and white-tailed deer, along with chorus frogs, can be found in the area. While there are no walking trails and the land is private, locals often walk their dogs along the road.
Access: To get to the site, follow Hwy 2A through Penhold, then turn west onto Grey St and cross the railroad tracks. The road will curve south and then west. A Habitat Steward sign is used to mark the location.
