Back Forty (49.7 km)

Back Forty is a 160-acre wetland and muskeg habitat located approximately 20 km northeast of Rimbey, Alberta. The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including moose, mule and white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrat, and waterfowl. Birdwatchers may spot species like the Sora, Wilson's Snipe, Franklin's Gull, and Olive-sided Flycatcher, as well as passerines like the Chipping Sparrow, Sandhill Crane, Wilson's Snipe, Common Yellowthroat, and Yellow Warbler. The site also supports a variety of plants, including willow species, trembling aspen, goldenrod, and wild strawberry. Though the habitat is rich in biodiversity, it is challenging to navigate due to dense willow thickets, wetlands, and deep water. Waterproof footwear is recommended for those exploring the area, which can also be difficult to traverse without getting disoriented. To access the site, visitors must cross a cattle pasture, which may contain livestock.

Access: From Crestomere, head west on Highway 53, north on Range Road 11, turn right at Township Road 432 for 2 km. The last 0.5 km is an undeveloped road.
